The Mackay Community Garden Inc. is a permaculture garden demonstration and education site and has been operating since 2008. It is continually evolving under the guidance of a core crew and the group of volunteers who dedicatedly lend their support. Your contribution is valued whether it is hands on, doing the work, through membership, general volunteering, administering the association as a member of our dynamic management committee, contributing to the application of provision of grants or many of the other various ways of being supportive.

Mackay Regional Council, our landlord; provides the space on a peppercorn lease.

What We Do

We are open for visitors and volunteers Thursdays to Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Our core team works with volunteers teaching various aspects of gardening and permaculture theory. We all maintain the site and the nursery for seedlings to sell to the public and the garden.

On a regular day you will find several volunteers weeding, working on chop n drop in the food forest or planting in the nursery. We spend our time in the gardening learning about what is in seasoning blossoming, what needs harvesting and what we need to be regularly maintained. We share plant benefits and how to live sustainabily in the tropics all-year round. We share fresh garden herbal tea, salads and wonderful conversations amongst volunteers. We also love to assist members and the general public with any questions relevant to gardening and sustainable living.

We encourage everyone young and old to visit the garden and volunteer to gain first-hand experience about gardening using the permaculture principles.

Throughout the year we host workshops on Permaculture concepts, community gatherings and celebrations regarding gardening and food. Some Permaculture topics explored at the workshops are Basic Home Food Gardening, Patterns in Nature, Introduction to Permaculture and composting courses.  In addition we offer the 72 hour Permaculture Design Certificate course over two weeks.  Visit our events page or find us on Facebook for more details.

We make ourselves available to conduct tours around our site. We also assist land holders (large and small) with site planning and project development. Please contact us for further details and bookings for tours.
